about me
At the confluence of the mighty Muskingum and Ohio rivers is the Appalachian town of Marietta, Ohio. In these rivers, along these banks and throughout the nearby old-growth forests, I spent the first 30 years of my life. I dodged drugs, death and jail in these hills but many of my friends didn't. Mary Oliver once asked if a little darkness was needed to prod one to life, to get one going. I'd rather have done without it, but nonetheless, like Evelyn Quan Wang in "Everything Everywhere All At Once," I've learned to use my stuck places and failures as portals, and I haven't stopped going since.
In my professional life, I'm an award-winning writer, editor and content strategist steeped in arts, culture and brand journalism. Heavily inspired by literature, comics and hip-hop, I approach my work with an emphasis on narrative, documentary realism and colorful pops of emotion. But really, it's all play to me. If I'm enjoying myself, you can feel it. I push for the same on the teams I lead.
I've been the Editor in Chief for three best-in-class (state and national) weeklies, including, most recently, the since-shuttered Columbus Alive. I'm happiest leading teams — pulling strengths from others, assembling a bigger picture through complementing pieces, working with writers, designers and photographers. Currently, I lead the content and editorial teams at CoverMyMeds. In my short time there already, our work's been defined as the best in the industry.
It all started with writing though. I've written for myself as a coping mechanism since I was lost a soccer teammate as a freshman in high school. I've since been published in outlets like Stereogum, ESPN FC, NYMag, Forbes and Pilgrim Magazine, alongside several best-in-class regional publications like Columbus Monthly and 614 Magazine. I've written and strategized marketing content for clients like McKesson, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pedialyte, Root Insurance, Charley's Philly Cheese Steaks and more.
And much like Peter Parker, I know with great power and talent comes great responsibility, so I'm determined to give back. Much has been given to me, so how can I not return the favor? Over the years, this has meant coaching youth soccer, youth pastoring middle school students, launching a sprawling annual arts, music and literature festival called the Flyover Fest in Columbus, Ohio, alongside acclaimed indie book publishers, Two Dollar Radio. And, most recently, I was elected to the board of directors for Sanctuary Night, one of the top non-profits to watch in Columbus.
When I'm not reading or writing, I'm usually making up stories with my kids, riding my bike, attending a concert or just enjoying the breeze on my skin and the whir of crickets on a cool summer night.
